About Leonard Home Performance
Over 7 years and 1,400+ energy audits across the Baltimore–DC metro — finding the problems other contractors miss and fixing them right the first time.
My Story
Most homeowners in Maryland have paid for insulation or HVAC work and still have the same problems. Hot second floors. Drafty basements. Energy bills that never seem to come down. The upgrades weren't wrong — the diagnosis was.
I'm Brian Leonard, founder of Leonard Home Performance. I built this business around one idea: fix the actual cause, not just the symptom. That starts with a thorough energy audit using blower door testing and thermal imaging — not a visual inspection and a sales pitch.
Seven years and 1,400+ audits later, I work exclusively in the BGE and PEPCO service territories across the Baltimore–DC metro. Every project I take on, I work personally. You'll talk to me on the phone, I'll be the one running your audit, and I'll be on-site for your install.
"Brian was featured while performing a home energy audit and sharing practical ways Maryland homeowners can lower their energy bills."
Read the story →What We Fix
Our region's housing stock — much of it built between 1950 and 1985 — was constructed before modern energy codes. These are the issues I see every week.
Hot second floors, cold basements, and rooms that never get comfortable — usually a sign of air sealing and insulation gaps, not an HVAC problem.
When your HVAC runs constantly, it's often compensating for air leaks — not a sign you need a new system. Air sealing first, then equipment.
Outlets, attic hatches, rim joists, and recessed lights are the biggest culprits. Blower door testing shows exactly where conditioned air is escaping.
Crawl space moisture, basement condensation, and ice dams in winter are all building-science problems — diagnosable and fixable without guesswork.
Credentials
BPI certification means I'm tested and verified on building science — not just insulation installation. I use blower doors and thermal imaging cameras to back recommendations with hard data, not guesses.
What Homeowners Say
"Brian Leonard provided outstanding service. He walked us through every finding from the energy audit and explained exactly what needed to be done and why. Highly recommended."
— Homeowner in Columbia, MD"Brian just completed an air sealing and insulation project in my very old and very drafty house. The difference was immediately noticeable — no more cold air coming in around the windows and the house heats up much faster."
— Homeowner in Baltimore City"We live in the North Potomac area and Brian did a fantastic job with our home energy audit. He was thorough, explained everything clearly, and the report he provided was detailed and easy to understand."
— Homeowner in North Potomac, MDUtility Rebates
Navigating utility rebate programs shouldn't be your job — it's mine. As a participating contractor in both the BGE and PEPCO Home Performance with ENERGY STAR programs, I handle the rebate paperwork from start to finish.
Most homeowners I work with are surprised by how much they qualify for. The rebate programs are generous, and I design every project to maximize what you get back.
